Charge in daylight to capture the most value
The value comes from timing. If someone is home during the day, or your charger has a schedule, set charging for daylight hours so it draws from the panels directly. Overnight charging still works, but it pulls from the grid at the full tariff and sends your daytime solar to export for less.
3-phase supply and charger types
Many landed homes have a 3-phase electrical supply, which allows faster chargers (11 kW or 22 kW) versus a single-phase 7.4 kW unit. Your installer's Licensed Electrical Worker confirms your supply and handles the electrical work and any SP Group requirements (see our approvals guide). Match the charger to your supply and to how fast you actually need to charge.
Do you need a battery?
Usually not, on cost grounds. If you mostly charge in daylight, the panels feed the car directly and a battery adds cost without adding much.
