Straits Times askST on Solar: The Answers Checked

ST's askST asked if landed homes should go solar. We checked payback, cost, export payments, timelines and upkeep against EMA and SP Group, October 2026.

Quick answer: Yes, for most Singapore landed homes solar pays for itself well within its life. Typical payback for a Singapore landed home is 3 to 6 years, based on AIKO panels with a 30-year warranty. Your own figure depends on your roof, your daytime use and your quote.

The Straits Times' askST column (31 October 2026) asked whether landed homeowners should install solar. We checked each answer against EMA's own guidance and added what 17 years and 1,500+ installations have taught Rezeca.

Is solar worth it for a landed home?

For most homes, yes. EMA estimates small rooftop solar costs about S$0.11 to S$0.15 per kWh over its life, against 31.16 cents per kWh (with GST) for grid power from SP Group today. Savings come from two places: power you use during the day, and power you export. Counting only the export credit understates the return.

What does the electricity tariff mean for solar right now?

SP Group's household tariff is 28.59 cents per kWh before GST from 1 October to 31 December 2026, down 10.4% from 31.91 cents in July to September. SP Group has said tariffs are expected to rise for January to March 2027 if higher fuel prices from tensions in the Middle East persist. Solar fixes the cost of the power you make yourself, whatever the tariff does.

How much does solar cost?

Rezeca's 2026 range for landed homes is S$1,200 to S$2,000 per kWp, with larger systems at the lower end. Quotes differ with panel brand and warranty, roof type, and what is included, such as the LEW, scaffolding and the SP Group application. A terrace house typically suits about 10 kWp; a semi-detached home fits 20 kWp or more.

What happens to the solar power I don't use?

It is exported to the grid and you are paid for it. How depends on who sells you electricity:

  • SP Group customers are paid under the Simplified Credit Treatment (SCT): the regulated tariff minus grid charges, about 22 cents per kWh this quarter.
  • Retailer customers are paid under the Enhanced Central Intermediary Scheme (ECIS), at half-hourly wholesale prices that can be above or below the regulated tariff.

How long does installation take?

A Rezeca project typically takes 8 to 12 weeks from signed contract to switch-on. The rooftop work itself takes 1 to 2 weeks, depending on weather; most of the rest is SP Group's connection process. A Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) then tests the system and applies to SP Group, which replaces your meter with a two-way meter where needed before the system is switched on. No licence is needed for a residential system under 1 MWac.

How long does a system last, and what upkeep does it need?

EMA says systems are designed to last at least 30 years, with panel warranties of 25 to 30 years and inverter warranties of 5 to 12 years. Plan a service every 6 to 12 months; EMA puts upkeep at about 1% to 2% of system cost a year. You can book a Rezeca maintenance visit online.

How many Singapore homes have solar?

EMA counted 8,086 residential solar installations at the end of June 2026.

How do I choose an installer?

EMA points homeowners to the National Solar Repository to find installers. Compare quotes, and ask each installer for past customers you can call. Rezeca Renewables has installed solar in Singapore since 2009: 1,500+ installations, 45+ MWp, BCA-registered, and 4.9 stars on Google. Frequently asked questions

What is the payback period for solar in Singapore?

Typical payback for a Singapore landed home is 3 to 6 years, based on AIKO panels with a 30-year warranty. It is shorter for homes that use more of their solar power during the day, and longer for smaller systems or when a battery is added.

How much does a solar system cost per kWp in Singapore?

Rezeca's 2026 range for landed homes is S$1,200 to S$2,000 per kWp, depending on system size, roof, equipment and scope.

How much am I paid for exported solar power?

SP Group customers on SCT receive the regulated tariff minus grid charges, about 22 cents per kWh from October to December 2026. Retailer customers on ECIS receive half-hourly wholesale prices.

How long does a solar installation take?

Typically 8 to 12 weeks from signed contract to switch-on. The rooftop work takes 1 to 2 weeks; the rest is mostly SP Group's connection and meter process.

Do I need a licence to install solar on my house?

No. EMA requires no licence for residential systems under 1 MWac. An LEW connects and commissions the system with SP Group.
